Everyone loves Instagram. But, what about Pinterest? It’s one of the most fun social media platforms ever, and one that is overlooked as part of a solid social media marketing strategy. It has quickly become one of the most popular social media outlets, both for personal and business use. There are over 250 million monthly users, with 81% of Pinterest users are Females, with Millennials being the largest user. Pinterest has been reported to have grown web traffic referrals by 30%, so it’s a great outlet to help generate traffic to your business blog or website.

The foremost thing that makes Pinterest such a great referrer to blogs and websites is that the majority of everyone’s content is curated. Sure, we all love to use Pinterest for a bit of self-promotion as well, but I can guarantee you that not even 3% of my 4,000 pins are my content. (And yes, I’m aware that that is an obnoxious number of pins–my Pinterest is in dire need of an audit. Also, I’m not doing the math, so I’m not quite sure what 3% of 4000 even is. Extra credit if you solve it.)

Pinterest is a great place for you to share your own content with the likelihood of it getting shared skyrocketing over that of Twitter or Facebook without paid promotion, as well as sharing others’ content. Plus, as I said, it’s downright fun!

So how do you use Pinterest to grow your business and land you clients?

1. Pin! Pin! Pin!

Staying active is the biggest way to get new followers and connecting with new potential clients and customers. Moreover, the most fun, of course! Who wouldn’t love getting to spend a half hour here and there on Pinterest because it’s productive? On my own personal Pinterest, I notice a massive increase in followers every time I spend a regular amount of time pinning new things. Of course, my own Pinterest is my favorite because I get to pin whatever I want.

However, if you’re pinning on a company Pinterest, it’s important to keep to what’s relevant to your product/service. For example, I also manage my clients' Pinterest, where we pin anything from food products recipes to event planning and business advice. It is a range and very industry specific. Therefore, when I’m working on their Pinterest, I stick only to pins relevant to that niche and their brand.

Although the likelihood of your own content getting shared by others is already much higher on Pinterest than other social media, it increases, even more, when you have a high number of followers. So, without further ado, here are a few actionable tips to help you gain more Pinterest followers.

2. Get fancy with your board covers.

I’m just a Pinterest snob, but I have hand-picked every single one of my board covers. Pinterest is all about visual appeal, and your profile page is no different. Make sure that your board covers are pretty, aren’t cut off, and don’t make your Pinterest look cluttered.

You can even take it one step further by branding your Pinterest covers–something that I’ll touch in more depth at a later date.

Strategic pinners choose their board titles, board covers, and board placement with purpose. When pinners fall on your profile, you want your top boards to be your best boards with the most eye-catching board covers. That’s how you get followers!

3. Join (or start) a collaborative board

I’ve said it once, and I’ll repeat it: collaborative boards are fantastic.

What is a collaborative board? Two words: colossal reach.

A collaborative board consists of a group of pinners, all pinning to the same board. In simple terms, it means that your pins and your Pinterest are getting put in front of thousands of new pinners, resulting in even more traffic to your Pinterest and your website.

It’s a no-lose situation. You make friends with others, you get your pins in front of twelve different Pinners’ followers, and you gain a ton of new followers.

4. Utilize Tailwind

For my Tribes, for example, I've joined tribes within social media marketing, content and digital marketing. The members of my tribe are other marketers wanting to share their content as well as bloggers looking for great tips to grow their business. Each Tribe member is allowed to add content (Pins) to the Tribe and other Tribe members are expected to share that content out to their Pinterest boards. Tribes operate very similar to group boards, but they are much more effective. I like to describe Tribes as group board on steroids.

5. SEO Matters. Use Keywords and Hashtags

How you pin images is just as important as what you pin. So use relevant search terms in your descriptions. Keywords in your description and images so that when people look up for a specific keyword your board shows up. The use of hashtags is also very important as that will help you in reaching out to a bigger audience.

I use the Pinterest search bar to look for images, so I can get an idea for keywords to use in my Pinterest descriptions.

Remember: your keywords should be terms people search for on Pinterest.

6. Post Original Images

Did you know that 80% of the posts on Pinterest are repins? This means posting original content is a great way to stand out. You should try and post original pictures and info graphs so that more people can be attracted to your profile. Other than this, try and repin posts that reflect your brand so that you can connect with other pinners and get more followers.

Types of content? For example, you can post:

  • Original images

  • Infographics

  • Content you find online

  • Quotes

  • Funny photos

In my experience, infographics stand out the most.

7. Follow Other Pinners

Try and follow a significant amount of people every day so that they can follow you back. You can always unfollow the people who don’t follow you back. This is a great way to have a steady growth.

8. Comment, Repin, & Tagging

Comment on popular pins so that people can learn about you and can follow your page. Just make sure that your comments are not spammish in nature as Pinterest takes action against spammers.

9. Make Use of Special Occasions

People like to make wish lists on Pinterest. So make boards for special festivals like Christmas, Thanksgiving, Eid and Hanukah so that it attracts people from all over the world.

Doing this will help you relate your products to an event. You can even use a cultural/traditional sentiment to direct customers to your website year round.

10. Add the Pinterest Follow Button

You should have a follow button on the website that can send some traffic to your Pinterest account. Install the button at prominent places like the header or footer and get a widget builder so that you can have a custom button that can fulfill your needs.
